  1. Fishing around tree stumps is the favorite of many anglers. Bass tend to hold
  2. tight right next to stumps, particularly in the root structure. When we look
  3. at the techniques for fishing around stumps, it's easy to see why so many
  4. fishermen favor these areas. There just seems to be no limit to the choice of
  5. lures that can be effectively used. For surface baits, a buzzbait is easy to
  6. use, and can produce some savage strikes if the bass are in an aggressive
  7. mood.

  9. Cast  the  buzzbait  so  that  it  will  pass by the target stump on the
  10. retrieve. If you are an adept caster, a floating stick bait like a Bomber
  11. Long-A or a Rapala is tough to beat. These baits are prone to snag so be
  12. careful. One advantage to this type of bait is that you can keep it in the
  13. strike zone longer. It also appeals to less aggressive fish than a buzzbait
  14. does. Propeller baits like the Devil's Horse or the Heddon Torpedo fit into
  15. this same category. Mid-range lure choice is dominated by the spinnerbait.

  17. These versatile baits can be fished fast so they churn the surface, or slow
  18. so they clunk the branches of deadfalls. The plastic worm and the pig & jig
  19. are superb baits for fishing in stumps and logs. The worms should be rigged
  20. Texas style to make them as weedless as possible, thus preventing hanging up
  21. on the logs or stumps. Many anglers prefer to fish the worm without any weight
  22. in these areas. Texas rigged Gitzits or grubs are a bait often overlooked for
  23. use in this type of cover.
